Poem: Marital Love

Some say love is fire,

Some call it a red rose or

a never-ending melody,

Some look for the divine in their love,

And some love Thee in search of love.

I don’t know how I want my love to be,

Neither have I, a list of “to be or not to be”

Marital love, I feel, is difficult to define,

But in the last two decades that I’ve known you,

I know there’s something special about you.

Not like lilies and carnations–

The flowers that make my heart sing to their tunes,

You carry your own fragrance, and play your own rhythm–

Sometimes soft and subtle like a Spring breeze

Sometimes uneven like a dry winter wind.

You see the day differently,

Sometimes, just the contrary of what I’d do,

“But he doesn’t have to be like me,”

I quietly tell myself,

And then your way of doing it becomes special too!

We’ve come a long way, as most couples do,

A girl I was–innocent, fearful, sensitive,

A woman I am today–confident, objective, compassionate.

Distant, ambitious, carefree you were,

Understanding, dependable and learned, you became.

You have a zeal for life–

the very long life that you’ve planned for yourself,

I have a zest too,

But I like designing my life moment by moment,

Aren’t we both, in this way, creating a balance?

We’ve both matured in our own ways; ripened like old wine, as they say,

Giving space to each other, but by the side we stayed,

I’m basking in the journey of knowing you deeper,

For I now, in your heart, there’s something special,

As I owe my growth to the person you chose to be!
