NaPoWriMo Day 20: The Game of Cricket

by | Apr 20, 2017 | Poetry | 11 comments

The prompt for Day 20 of NaPoWrimo is to write a poem that incorporates the vocabulary and imagery of a specific sport or game. Your poem could invoke chess or baseball, hopscotch or canasta, Monopoly or jai alai. The choice is yours!

Cricket fever is in the town, so I decided to write about the most loved game in my family and around, cricket 🙂

The men in my country are crazy about cricket

they jump and they yell at the fall of a wicket

Test series, World Cup, IPL or T20

the league is immaterial for dudes of this gentry

Ground was ready, grass rich green

stadium crammed up, pitch set for team

the blue team dared the ones in green

to chase their score with sweep upstream

Excitement of spectators soon got a tuck

the first green batsman went out for a duck

the players caught up in next five overs

with fours and sixes at balls of spinners

Tension at its peak, all fans eyed the field

the green batsman was to hit a century

the best blue pacer delivered a Yorker

the green batsman went short of one run

The blue team rejoiced, the green didn’t lose hope

bouncer, full toss, they were all set to cope

finally, the spirit of players didn’t die

the blues and the greens ended with a tie!
