ALS NaPoWriMo Day 14: Write a poem on the theme, “I wanted to learn this for a long time.”
Poem: I Am Learning
One step forward
I take
Just one…
But
suddenly
something pulls me back
A voice in my head
cautions me,
reminds me of my past
I resist.
Past, I tell her
Isn’t it gone?
It ignores my words
Comes back
with force
More memories it brings along
To keep me trapped
in the shadow of what’s gone
I feel weak,
even incomplete
The absence of the past haunts me
Is reality too bad?
I ask myself
I argue with that voice
It smirks
clouding my judgment
with a dense layer of fog
I contest
I plead
I struggle
It insists
It persists
It overpowers
I feel inept
I cry, I wail
I have an urge to surrender
But something inside
denies to die
refuses to be imprisoned
I hold on to it–
The little bird of hope
With wings of courage
It lifts me from the ground
Unties me from my binds
Past, it says, let it go
I follow its voice
I fly along with it
Liberated, I feel
I fall back sometimes
But I remind myself
I am learning
I am learning to fly
I am learning to rise
I am learning to let go
