Politics has always been an unknown, unreachable, and ambiguous, or rather, a mysterious terrain for me. And I believe, it is so for the majority of Indians. We enjoy discussing politics, but we never want to be a part of it or understand the intricacies of the field. We want changes, we like to criticise those in power, and point out their shortcomings, but we are not interested in knowing their challenges. Whatever little information or misinformation the “aam janta” (at least in metros) has about this field, it is owed to Bollywood and OTT.
In his book, Saurabh, a young State Spokesperson in HP, has brilliantly presented the role and perspective of the grassroots-level Karyakarta in building the nation. From challenges, obstacles and struggles to opportunities and excitement that a worker at the ground level undergoes, Saurabh has meticulously compiled his journey of politics in the state of Himachal Pradesh in an autobiographical manner, like fitting the blocks of dominoes, wherein what is visible to an outsider is a cohesive structure, but internally, even a single piece can cause it to fall.
The change of political tides from one leadership to another was felt by every citizen, but the book is a kind of behind-the-scenes story of the massive transformations that took place under the new leadership. Since the author, Saurabh, joined the BJP at the onset of its transformation phase, the book is a first-hand account of the witness, which he acknowledges as nothing short of remarkable.
Dhiman has explained the visit of Mr. Modi to the Parivartan Rally 2014 so vividly that the scene can be explicitly imagined by the reader. I also liked the words of the author when he described his move to the BJP as, “RSS gave me roots–quiet, deep, steady. BJP gave me wings–loud, messy, mine.” It reiterated a life lesson that you need both the strong roots and the freedom to fly to succeed.
Saurabh has detailed the reaction and perspective of the general public as well as the implementation issues at the ground level for various schemes as Jan Dhan Yojana, Make in India, Digitisation, Demonetisation, Swachh Bharat, GST rejig, Article 370, Ram Mandir, election campaigning, and the change of leaders at various positions.
In simple, understandable language, the author has portrayed KaryaKarta, who works at the grassroots level, as the pillar of the political party, not only during elections, but throughout their term.
