Welcome to Week 3 of WordWise Wednesdays!

Today, we delve into a phrase from Gurmukhi.
ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀ ਕਲਾ (Chardi Kala)
Meaning:
It is a concept in Sikhism/ Punjabi that refers to a positive, uplifted & unwavering state of mind marked by high spirits, optimism, joy & resilience, even in the face of challenges or adversities.
It is not merely saying, “stay positive”. It is the strength to remain hopeful and fearless, no matter what happens, with an acceptance of life’s ebbs & flows as God’s will.
This word is especially significant in Sikh teachings and everyday Punjabi life.
Chardi Kala means staying cheerful even in hard times. Someone who lives in Chardi Kala does not fear suffering or setbacks. They stay devoted to prayer and continue helping others with a steady heart.
Etymology:
This two-word Punjabi saying, which is a way of life, is made up of two words.
“Chardi” is a Punjabi word meaning “rising” or “ascending,” and “Kala” is a Sanskrit word meaning “skill,” “energy,” or “condition.”
So, Chardi Kala refers to an ever–ascending state of the spirit, or rising energy of an individual or of a group.
Insights:
The Sikh prayer, ਅਰਦਾਸ (Ardas), ends with the words,
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀ ਕਲਾ,
ਤੇਰੇ ਭਾਣੇ ਸਰਬੱਤ ਦਾ ਭਲਾ
“Nanak Naam Chardi Kala,
Tere Bhane Sarbatt Da Bhala.”
Meaning: Meditating on God’s name (Nanak Naam) blesses you with Chardi Kala (rising power). It is with God’s will (bhaana) that humanity will prosper, as we identify with the name of the One through Chardi Kala.
It highlights the Sikh values of positivity, strength, & kindness towards all. Characterised by the constant bliss of hope, self-dignity, courage, & the grandeur of soul, Chardi Kala is the glorious state of mind in which there is no fear, jealousy or enmity. Those in Chardi Kala do not lose heart; they move ahead with courage and faith. Maintaining Chardi Kala is considered a virtue and an integral part of the Sikh way of life.
In the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, there are many hymns that talk about Hukam, or Divine Order.
