NaPoWriMo Day 12: A Poetic Treat

Prompt by Maureen for Day 12:

And now for another (optional) prompt from our archives. Today, I challenge you to write a poem that addresses itself or some aspect of its self (i.e., “Dear Poem,” or “what are my quatrains up to?”; “Couplet, come with me . . .”) This might seem a little “meta” at first, or even kind of cheesy. But it can be a great way of interrogating (or at least, asking polite questions) of your own writing process and the motivations you have for writing, and the motivations you ascribe to your readers.

 

Poem: A Poetic Treat

 

My Dear Poem,

 

From the silo of my thoughts,

I pulled a few words and tossed them into a verse

 

A speck of rhyme, a pinch of cadence

Some rhythm to make you lyrical

 

I played with meter, adjusted some syllables

Verses in couplets appeared graceful

 

But I notice you keep nudging me

To add a line or few

 

I thought a five-verse meal

Would satiate your appetite a great deal

 

But here I am, trying to serve on your platter

Some words from thesaurus to garnish some glitter

 

Which form would appease your gustatory sense today

A Triolet, my lady, or a Sistina or Haibun can also partake

 

Darn the acrostic or sonnet today

I can only serve you free verse today!
